Il significato
Il brano
riesce a immergere l’ascoltatore nella parte più profonda di sé stesso, strofa dopo strofa, invitandolo a contemplare un silenzio che non è solo individuale, ma si fa collettivo, sociale. Un sogno quasi allucinato che si fa visione e, man mano che procede, diventa consapevolezza, come un risveglio subitaneo della coscienza.
Il “suono del silenzio”
non è solo il bisogno di solitudine che abita ciascuno di noi, ma l’incapacità di comunicare che caratterizza la nostra epoca pure dominata da informazioni e mezzi di comunicazione: tutti parlano, ma
nessuno riesce davvero a dire, a esprimere, l’oscurità che lo abita.
La gente “parla senza parlare”, “ascolta senza ascoltare”, recita Paul Simon nella strofa forse più incisiva del brano: il vero suono del silenzio è rumore che rasenta il caos.

raduce la superficialità di un’umanità sempre più distratta dal proprio febbrile egoncentrisimo: una società in cui una forma di violenza è data anche da fenomeni nuovi come il ghosting, l’assenza di risposta, l’interruzione della comunicazione.
Nella profezia musicale di Simon & Garfunkel
prendeva corpo la solida indifferenza di un’epoca sempre più digitale, astratta e sempre meno umana.
